Long for David's Divinely-Dependent Dynasty (1 Samuel 31)

The fall of a king. The promise of a better one.

Pastor Tim Carroll brings the series through 1 & 2 Samuel to the close of its first book — the death of Saul, who fell on his own sword after a life of rejecting dependence on God. Even in this dark passage, Pastor Tim traces a thread of hope: the Davidic covenant promise in 2 Samuel 7, in which God pledges to establish a dynasty and a kingdom that will last forever. I

srael in exile knew this promise, and it gave them reason to long for a coming King who — unlike Saul — would depend wholly on Yahweh. That King has come in Jesus Christ, the Son of David, who lived righteously, died for our sins, and now reigns at the right hand of God the Father. And He is coming again — which is why the sermon ends not just with reflection, but with longing: Come, Lord Jesus.
